Alex reflects on the day’s events as he sips on aged bourbon, Brian Jackson notices him as soon as he enters the bar and walks over to say hello. “Big day for the prosecution.” Alex shakes his head “yes”. “I’m betting the house that it will be the last.” Alex continues to sip his drink. “How’s it feel to know that tomorrow the proverbial ball will be in my court.” “Mr. Jackson the testimonies today spoke for themselves.” Brian laughs and bangs his hand on the bar. “Bartender….7 and 7 and another of what my friend is drinking.” “Thank you Mr. Jackson.” “It’s the least I could do for embarrassing you throughout this trial.” “I’ve heard you were a snob.” “Yeah….that’s what my wife tells me.” Brian drinks his scotch then places a Grover Cleveland on the bar. “You keep the change….use it for tomorrow night when you’re in real need of drowning your sorrows….by the way did you get the message from my secretary?” “I did….I’ll have to interview her before she can take the stand.” “Of course….she’ll be in your office as soon as the doors open tomorrow.” “A little early, no?” “I want her to take the stand first.” “Alright….just make sure she’s there.”

“The defense calls Caroline Silverman.” Caroline takes the stand and doesn’t look away from Anna West. “Ms. Silverman what is your relationship to the defendant?” “She’s my mother.” “And what was your relationship with the deceased Perry West?” “He was my step father.” “Did you ever live under the same roof with your mother and step father?” “Yes.” “How long?” “From March of 1970 to November of 1985.” “Can I ask why you moved out?” “My step father demanded I leave his house after my mother gave birth to Perry Jr.” “Why would he demand that you leave a place that you lived in for 15 years?” “He convinced my mother that I would be a danger to the new baby.” “Why would he think that?” “At the time I had a problem with cocaine.” “And now you don’t?” “I’ve been clean since 1991.” “Congratulations.” “Thank you.” “Ms. Silverman at what age did you begin to use cocaine?” “My first time was when I was fourteen.” “And what year was that?” “1974.” “So you had been living with the deceased Perry West for almost four years.” “Yes.” “Ms. Silverman did you and Mr. West ever have an inappropriate relationship?” “Not on my own accord.” “I’m not sure what you mean by that?” “The things that went on between Perry and me, I never wanted to happen.” “Like what Ms. Silverman?” “First it started with Perry walking into my room by mistake while I was getting dressed, then he got bolder, watching me while I used the bathroom or took a shower.” “Do you remember what year these incidents started?” “1973.” “Did your mother know about these incidents?” “Yes….I told her as soon as the first one happened!” “Do you know if she said anything to the deceased?” “She confronted Perry; I can remember this huge argument and then nothing.
